Navigating Week One of My Work Exchange in Sofia, Bulgaria

Join me as I recount the ups and downs of my first week in Sofia, Bulgaria, where I embarked on a work exchange at a hostel. From unexpected airport delays to cultural shocks and personal challenges, this week was a whirlwind of experiences that set the tone for my ten-week adventure.

Journey Begins: Dublin to Frankfurt

My adventure kicked off at the Dublin airport, filled with excitement and anticipation. I was set for a quick layover in Frankfurt, but things took an unexpected turn. The long lines at the Frankfurt airport caused me to miss my connecting flight.

To my dismay, my one-hour layover turned into a 12-hour layover. Thankfully, I made my way over to the airport's "nap cabs" which provided a cozy spot for some much-needed rest. I took advantage of the privacy to recharge before my next flight.

Understanding Work Exchanges

For those unfamiliar, a work exchange is a unique arrangement where individuals trade their labor for accommodation. It often appeals to travelers like me who want to immerse themselves in a new culture while keeping costs down.

This arrangement can also be found in various forms, such as families hiring in-house babysitters or individuals helping out with tasks around the house. In hostels, the exchange typically involves volunteering for a certain number of hours in return for a place to stay.

Reunion with Vlad

Upon landing in Sofia, I was thrilled to see my friend Vlad, who had graciously come to pick me up from the airport. Our friendship blossomed during a previous work exchange in Montana, USA and I was eager to share this new adventure with him.

However, the moment I stepped outside, I was hit by the intense heat of late August in Sofia. The sweltering weather combined with the unfamiliar Cyrillic alphabet left me feeling overwhelmed. But I was excited to embrace this ten-week adventure.

First Impressions of Sofia

Settling into my 18-bed dorm at the hostel, I did my best to get some rest after the hectic day. The day that would follow, my first full day in Sofia, would be all about getting accustomed to my new surroundings.

Sofia was a whirlwind of sights and sounds. The language barrier was daunting, and the local currency was a puzzle. The sidewalks were in poor condition, adding to the challenges, but I reminded myself that I was there for an adventure.

Dining Adventures

As my first full day wound down, Vlad and I stumbled upon a lively restaurant. The ambiance was vibrant, and despite the loud music, we found ourselves enjoying the atmosphere. This spot quickly became one of our favorites in Sofia.

Dining out was a delightful experience, especially with the affordable prices. We savored every bite, appreciating how our meals were not just food, but a part of our cultural immersion.

First Work Day at the Hostel: A Rocky Start

When my second day rolled around, I was ready to dive into my work at the hostel. The plan was to start at 10 a.m., but upon arrival, I was told to wait an additional hour. This initial delay didn’t set the best tone for my experience.

Eventually, I was assigned to shadow the cleaning lady, but she paid me no mind. It felt disheartening to be ignored -- especially on my first day. I struggled to keep a positive attitude and ultimately decided that this work exchange assignment was not for me.

Waiting for my first shift at the hostel

I made the tough decision to forgo the work exchange entirely. I realized that I needed to focus on my Master's dissertation and that the unpredictable schedule at the hostel simply wouldn't accommodate my academic commitments. I texted one of the full-time staff members to inquire about paying for my stay. Once I received confirmation, I paid for my ten-week hostel stay in cash and felt a wave of relief wash over me.

This wasn't proving to be the low-cost adventure that I had hoped for, but it was nice feeling like I was back in control of my time and free to prioritize my academic goals.

Adjusting to Life in Sofia

As the days passed, the culture shock was real and I often felt overwhelmed. The language barrier compounded my feelings of isolation and made simple tasks feel monumental. Despite these challenges, I was determined to make the most of my time here. I explored local shops, tried to communicate with locals, and navigated the city with a sense of curiosity. Each day presented new opportunities for growth and learning.

Exploring local shops in Sofia

With my new living arrangement sorted, it was time to set out to truly immerse myself in Sofia. The city was vibrant, and I was eager to explore its hidden gems. I made it a point to practice my Bulgarian, even if it was just a few words (like, five) here and there. The locals were often friendly and appreciative of my efforts.

Cultural Observations at the Grocery Store

Grocery shopping was an adventure in itself. I recall stepping into a local store and feeling like a fish out of water. The products were different, and the labels often left me scratching my head. I found it amusing that many items were labeled as "full" when they clearly had space at the top of the bottles.

Despite the things that seemed odd to me, I embraced the experience. The simple act of shopping turned into a cultural exchange, filled with learning.

The Quest for a Floor Fan

The heat of Sofia was relentless, and I was determined to find a personal floor fan to keep beside my bed. The 18-bed hostel dorm I was staying in was stifling -- especially during the day. I made it my mission to find a fan for myself and receive a small sense of comfort. I visited several shops and asked every person who I thought could help my search, only to be met with confusion or the dreaded "no" response.

After days of searching, I finally stumbled upon a store that had a beautiful stack of fans. I was elated! Although I didn't have the necessary screwdriver to assemble it fully, I was able to use the top half to keep cool during the sweltering nights.

A Comedic Library Adventure

In search of a quiet place to work on my dissertation, I decided to explore the local university library. However, my adventure took an unexpected turn when I accidentally wandered into a lecture hall instead. It was a comical experience as I peeked into rooms, feeling completely out of place.

Despite the initial confusion, I eventually found a cozy corner where I could settle down and write. The old architecture of the university captivated me, contrasting with the modern buildings I was used to back home. It became a cherished memory of my time in Sofia.

Laundry Troubles and Final Thoughts

Finding a laundry service was another challenge, especially with my (extremely) limited Bulgarian. When I finally dropped off my laundry, I couldn't help but feel a sense of accomplishment. Even though I suspected I was being overcharged compared to my previous experiences, I was just relieved to have clean clothes. This small victory symbolized my adaptation to life in Sofia.

Reflecting on my first week, I realized it was filled with unexpected twists and turns. While the work exchange didn't pan out as planned, my experiences in Sofia were shaping up to be unforgettable. He
